Archaeological Museum

Archaeological Museum in Zagreb was founded in 1864. It is located in the historicist Vranyczany-Hafner Palace on Zrinjevac. A valuable museum collection of approximately 460,000 objects has been systematically organized into appropriate collections. The Prehistoric Collection presents the development of numerous cultures, from the Paleolithic period to the Late Iron Age. The Classical Antiquities Collection includes monuments of Greek provenance, as well as Roman monuments of both local and foreign origin. The Medieval Collection follows a chronological system, covering the period from the Migration Era to the Late Middle Ages. The Egyptian Collection is the only one of its kind in Southeastern Europe. Particularly remarkable is the Zagreb Mummy, wrapped in linen bandages bearing the longest preserved Etruscan text. The Numismatic Collection is among the largest and most significant in Europe and the world. The museum also houses a rich library containing more than 50,000 titles of professional archaeological and related literature. In the museum courtyard there is a Lapidarium featuring an interesting collection of Roman stone monuments. The museum is also responsible for the archaeological park “Andautonia” in Ščitarjevo, where the remains of an ancient city dating from the 1st to the 4th century have been preserved.
